  • Household Hazardous Waste Program

Dispose of household chemical products the responsible way!

What should I do about hazardous waste products?

    • Identify them
Look for the following words and phrases on labels:  WARNING, CAUTION, DANGER, flammable, volatile, toxic, corrosive, caustic, reactive, poison, contains phosphates, eye irritant, harmful in swallowed, do not mix, wear rubber gloves.
    • Use up entirely
Always read labels and follow directions carefully.  If you can’t use a product up, try to find a neighbor, friend, or community organization who can.
    • Store in a cool, dry place
Keep all hazardous products in original containers with lids fastened securely.  Do not mix, combine, or consolidate them.
    • Recycle or take to collection site (See information below!)
Never throw hazardous products away with your regular trash.
Note:  Motor oil, brake and transmission fluid, antifreeze, and car batteries can be recycled at most service stations.
    • Use environmentally safe products
Use latex paints instead of oil based paints.  Look for products that say: environmentally safe, biodegradable, contains no phosphorus, non-toxic, non-corrosive, low VOC (volatile organic compounds that cause paint fumes.)
    • Don’t let products go to waste
Buy only what is needed to do the job.  Avoid over-purchasing with the thought it can be used later.

Partnership with Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center
In October 2008, the Town of Addison entered into a partnership with Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center to accept household hazardous waste from Addison residents.  With a photo ID and a utility bill, Addison residents may now take their chemical products to the drop off center in Dallas.

    Location
11234 Plano Rd., Dallas, TX 75243
The collection center is located one mile north of 635, between Miller Rd. and Forest Ln.  Look for a white building with bright turquoise trim.  Entrance is the first driveway north of the railroad tracks on the east side of the street.  Do not turn into the driveway closest to the building; it is the exit gate.

If you're doing work on an older home or school building, be sure to follow lead-safe work practices. Contain the work area and keep kids and pets away. Minimize dust. And clean up thoroughly. Lead is harmful to adults and children, and common renovation jobs like sanding, cutting, or demolition can create lead dust and chips. See more on renovating from the EPA.
