Among those projects: Addison's new George Herbert Walker Bush Elementary School, scheduled to open for the 2011-12 school year.

In 2009, the Board of Trustees adopted a policy requiring all new schools to be designed and built according to a code of environmental standards developed by the Texas Collaborative for High Performance Schools and to incorporate as many sustainable features as practical when renovating or adding on to existing schools. The standards require the incorporation of energy efficiency, conservation and design features that foster responsible use of resources. Evidence suggests that high-performance, sustainable schools increase student performance, foster a sense of community, improve student and staff health, reduce environmental impact and lower operating expenses.

A new $128 million public-private project on the drawing boards in far North Dallas hopes to produce a sharper picture of the virtues of going green. Plans for what essentially will be an urban living laboratory call for 600 apartments, 150,000 square feet of office, 105,000 square feet of retail space, plus two hotels equaling 250 rooms. The facility can house about 3,500 residents or accommodate approximately 1,800 employees for office space.

Christmas, of course, isn’t a famously “green” time of year, unless you are talking about the trees we cut down or the currency that seems to fly endlessly out of our wallets and purses. The spirit of the season almost insists that we throw caution (and energy) to the wind when it comes to fancying-up trees and winning the arms race on outdoor decorations.

When you go shopping for lights this season, you’ll find no shortage of LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) vying for your attention, sitting on shelves right next to their more traditional incandescent brethren. Those boxes will tout savings of 80 percent or more over the older technology, an environmentally-friendly edge that could take some of the sting out of those post-holiday bills. Claims that the lights will burn twice as bright and last up to 20 years are pretty attractive, too.

Through the new program, rebates will be available on a first-come, first-served basis through a purchase and mail-in program. The goal of the program is to promote awareness of ENERGY STAR appliances and decrease energy consumption by encouraging appliance replacement.

Imagine an array of wind turbines in West Texas, whirring away, generating electricity to be transmitted to Addison and other points in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Imagine that clean, green power surging into your home. Then, imagine your new, state-of-the-art electric car plugged into a 240-volt outlet in your garage, charging that clean-running, environmentally friendly vehicle for the next day’s commute or round of errands.

If all that sounds like a nice idea that will never happen, guess again. In Texas it is happening, right now, thanks to a previously unlikely alliance of planners, power infrastructure providers, utility companies and automobile manufacturers, all coming together to help the future get here just a little bit faster.
