Spring is coming, and it’s time for Addison residents to start thinking about how current water restrictions will impact their lawns and gardens.
On Feb. 11, James Hatcher of Dallas County Master Gardeners presented ”Water Restrictions are Coming! Is Your Lawn Ready?” to a gathering hosted by the Addison Arbor Foundation at the Addison Athletic Club.
Among Hatcher’s recommendations:
- Mow St. Augustine grass at a height of 2 3/4 to 3 inches. Mow bermuda at a height of 1.5 inches.
- Water your lawn 1 inch every time. In general, during the growing season, this is once every 5 days for a period of 30 minutes. Heat, rain, and length of day can change interval between watering but always water 1 inch.
- Fertilize using only a fertilizer that is all nitrogen. If you use a mulching mower, you might not have to fertilize.
