  • An Eco-Friendly Solution to Keeping the Home Fires Burning

    Share

Time to cozy up around the fireplace with a glass of nog and some holiday tunes to lift your spirits before the credit card bills arrive next month.

But why put all that soot into the air, or burn logs from trees that would have preferred more time in the forest? There’s an eco-friendly solution, the Enviro-Log, which is made from recycled cardboard waste. Now you’re cuddling in front of a fire that will produce less particulate pollution (which gets inside as well as outside, didn’t think of that did you?), can be used for cooking and will burn longer, on average, than regular fire wood.

Enviro-Log burns hotter and therefore cleaner than wood logs, and it’s safe to roast chesnuts and marshmallows over, according to the Atlanta-based Enviro-Log company.

Enviro-Log claims its yule log alternatives produce 86 percent less creosote, 80 percent less carbon monoxide and 30 percent fewer emissions overall; and they use no petroleum additives. We’re in no position to test that scientifically, but we’ll be trying a few at home just to see if the fireplace back flow seems a little more tolerable.

You can find Enviro-Logs just about anywhere now. In the Addison area, check out Home Depot, K-Mart, and select Whole Foods stores.

Use a layer of organic mulch around plants to reduce evaporation and save hundreds of gallons of water a year. When you need to add or replace a flower or shrub, choose a low water use plant and save up to 550 gallons of water a year.
