Finally, for those who hear not school bells but the call of the wild — or of a post-collegiate year of vagabonding — as fall approaches, the outfitters at Mountainsmith have products for you, as well. Boasting that they make the “first ever recycled Alpine pack,” the company uses recycled PET with durability ranging up to 840d for reinforcements and makes its buckles and hardware from “sustainable bio-polymer.”

The Circuit 3.0, with a mammoth 5370 cubic-inch capacity, can stow enough gear to last you as far as your legs hold out, and is smartly laid out, to boot — with a great weight-distribution and plenty of side compartments offering access to frequently-used gear. (Part of the pack even unzips from the rest for use as a lumbar pack, so you can leave the heavy stuff at camp during a day of casual hiking.)

Again, a bit of roughhouse testing with the Circuit suggests that this basic-looking bag is made for real, sustained use, and that nothing’s being sacrificed for that enviro thumbs-up. Of all the lessons the school year has in store, that’s one worth learning before going on a “green” shopping spree.

Use a layer of organic mulch around plants to reduce evaporation and save hundreds of gallons of water a year. When you need to add or replace a flower or shrub, choose a low water use plant and save up to 550 gallons of water a year.
